Governor Walker: No Friend of Wisconsin Women
Governor Scott Walker made it clear which side his administration is on in the war against women’s rights. Yesterday, Walker quietly signed a bill that would make it more difficult for an employee to file suit against an employer who is not being fairly compensated for equal work. This law mainly effects working women in Wisconsin and could make wages for working families fall short by a few thousand dollars a year.
Another bill Governor Walker passed attacking women’s rights is a law allowing sex education teachers to ignore the practice of contraception and stress abstinence as the only way to prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. This repeals a former state law that required schools teaching sex education to use a comprehensive curriculum, including teaching about contraception. As endless scientific studies show, abstinence-only programs are highly ineffective and are not the way to educate Wisconsin’s next generation of young women.
Women and Wisconsin deserve better than this. At a time when the rest of the country is progressing, Wisconsin continues to take steps backward at the hand of this administration.
